Industry
Industrial production generates about a quarter of the gross domestic product of Belarus (27,1% in 2021). The most developed industrial sectors of the country include engineering, light and food industries, woodworking, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.
Energy Industry
In 2022, Belarus’ electricity generation amounted to 39.4 billion kWh. Electricity consumption totaled 38.6 billion kWh. Belarus has built its first nuclear power plant with the total output capacity of two power-generating units at 2,400MW.
Agriculture
Agriculture is an important sector of the Belarusian economy that is responsible for the country’s food security and export potential. The contribution of agriculture to the country’s GDP in 2021 amounted to 5.6%. As of 1 January 2021, the sector comprised over 1,400 agricultural enterprises and 3,000 farms. More than 259,000 people are employed in agriculture. Dairy and meat industries offer the widest range of products – around 1,000 meat products, and over 1,500 dairy products. In 2021 Belarus’ export of agricultural products and food totaled $6.7 billion, with the share of these products in the country’s total export at 16.8%.
Investment
Belarus has a broad range of preferential regimes, ranging from stimulating high-tech and export-oriented industries to regional development. At the same time, existing regimes in the country do not substitute, but complement each other.
Preferential regimes are in place in:
- Free economic zones;
- China-Belarus Industrial Park Great Stone;
- Special Economic Zone Bremino-Orsha;
- Hi-Tech Park;
- Investment agreements;
Medium-sized, small urban settlements, rural areas and another.
Free economic zones have been functioning in Belarus since 1996.
A large-scale project – China-Belarus Industrial Park Great Stone with the status of a special economic zone – is being implemented.
Belarus became the first country in the world to introduce comprehensive legal regulation of businesses based on blockchain technology.
